Week 14 - Phase 2 - June 2nd

Wednesday 2nd June

11.30 sitting here waiting for deliveries of stones and cutting tools, so unable to do much, so been looking patio options and it seems to be getting more complex and expensive at the same time. Moving away from the idea of the black stone because they haven't got the 19 sq m pack sizes I need and there's no such thing as individual stones that you can order, so that's a pile of crap.

Currently looking at these https://paveworld.co.uk/shop/patio-paving/600-mixed-size-pack-19-50-m2-light-grey-22-mm-calibrated/

These are all in the £550 region but are a 19 sq m packs.

In the end gave up waiting had an early lunch after getting the call from Screwfix saying the replacement disc was ready to collect. So had a look at stuff and patio slabs PGR, but it's expensive. bought some gloves and then went back home. Shortly after the Cobbles turned up...

A little technical point here (above) We've learned from the previous gabions a number of different tricks. The gap between the front 'Heavy gauge' panel and the inner dividing panel is between one and two grids, it's secured at the ends on the horizontal wires, not the vertical wires. This allows it to slide, and this is really helpful and allows flexibility with regards the stones at the ends, you can choose large or more stones and support them behind with the rough rubble.  We all cut the top row off and this helps when you place the top stones as the wire is less visible.

Another technical point (Below). We then line the inner divider with this black fabric liner. Once the stones are in, the black liner isn't visible at all, but simply darkens the spaces between the stones and gives the impression of a Gabion totally filled with cobbles. Without the liner you might find you can see your rough rubble and bricks.

We also have the liner go over the top for the same reason (below)

We use 5 doubled up wires front to back to stop any bulging as well as the side to side 'Stays' that are supplied with the Gabions (Not featured in this shot).

The view from the door towards the end of the day with the Gabion poised to be placed in the hole.

By the time I finished at 9.30pm The Gabion had been in and out of the hole a couple of times as I'd dug the hole too deep and I've still got to get the levels all correct so it the same at the Gabions already in place. Tomorrow morning that's the main objective alongside buying the Sleepers that are going to line the steps. Looking at the Gabion and the width of the steps I might cut a series of grids off the Gabion so that it's narrower as you look at it, as I reckon that'll enable the steps to be similar to the size they are at the moment 60cm?

I spoke to the bloke across the road about me having his massive grinder and he was okay with it and said, yeah you're good for a week or more.
